Lyon overcome amatuers Quevilly to lift the French Cup

29 Apr

Lyon have disappointed all neutral fans by beating French amateur side, Quevilly in the final of the French Cup. Lisandro Lopez’s 28th minute goal was enough to see the French giants lift their first trophy in four years and break the minnow’s hearts.

The rise of Quevilly from the third-tier of French football was the story of this year’s Coupe de France. Having seen off Rennes, in the semi-final, and Marseille, in the quarters, Lyon proved too much and dominated much of the game.

The last time Quevilly appeared in the final was 1927 when they were beaten by Olympique de Marsaille. In the same year, work started on Mount Rushmore and the Spirit of St. Louis made it’s famous flight across the Atlantic.

85 years on and the result was the same for the underdogs who may have finally ran out of steam. Nothing can be taken away from the side who came second in a competition that over seven thousand clubs take part in.

Lyon, who currently sit fourth in Ligue Une, deservedly lifted the trophy in front of fans at the Stade de France.
